The Electric Department holds a safety class each year for the 5th graders in the city. The class touches on some safety tips and a few tips to help conserve electricity. We also have a few wires in various sizes and types they pass around. They also get to see what lightening and a squirrel does to the wires and apparatus. They can see the parts we use in maintaining and building of the lines.
They see the equipment and trucks we use and can sit in the seat. We also put up a pole and give them a safety tip on vehicles with wires over them from storms or accidents.
We also have a small scale model of a housing area with a few homes with trees, cars, streets, transformers, substations, power poles and wires. They also get to see it work and why birds can land on a power line without being electrocuted. It is a great educational item the electric department has.
